History Repeats: Pointless Ramblings of an Agricultural Economist

A few years ago I worked at BankWest gathering information for my university thesis. Spending two days a week there for three months I got my first taste of the rat-race.

It tasted a bit like dead ant smell.

My frustrations and lack of a creative outlet drove me to create a series of short articles about my view on…...stuff. They were called “The Pointless Ramblings of an Agricultural Economist” and they saved me. I was repelled by the office lifestyle and declared that I would never take part in this world by choice.

So I escaped the 9-5 cage and spent the last couple years making slime, freezing things in liquid nitrogen and blowing stuff up for a living.

But then something happened. Something no one wants to face, something that you cringe at the thought of…. just like an unwanted pregnancy but worse. This was completely unpreventable.

I turned 25.

Now it wasn’t the fact that since my departure from university the only thing I had managed to do was get into debt, ruin some friendships and get my WOW character to 70, that got me worried. Though it probably should have. It was more the fact that as i approached 30, that crucial age in our society whereby you are expected to have met the person you will divorce, have saved up to buy a few bricks to live under and at the very least be thinking about spawning young, I had nothing but more of the same ahead.

So I did what I said I was never going to do. I got a “real” job. And not just any job…. a job as an Agricultural Economist the job that turned me off working all those years ago.

As I sit here and look at the pair of scissors on my desk and wonder how painful could it really be? I try focus on the one shining light in all this….. it will give me a chance to offer up to the internet gods some more pointless ramblings.

I hope they will be pleased.
