We’re all f@#ked! – Part 1

Global warming is not coming, it’s here. Its impacts are already being felt around the planet. Unfortunately this is only the beginning.
Global warming is a bit like a kitchen fire. An unattended pan heats up and suddenly the oil catches on fire. It starts off small, but no one notices it. The oil starts to boil and the flames are leaping up, sending smoke into their air. Suddenly you see there is a problem. So you try pat it out with a tea towel but the tea towel catches on fire. You try throw some water on it, but this just makes it worse as it sprays the oil across the bench. Soon the stove is melting and the cupboards are on fire, in a flash the kitchen is burning, who would have thought the cheap bench-top would have been so flammable? You call the fire department for help, but the help is a long way off. You try using the garden hose but it does nothing as you watch the fire jump from the kitchen to the couch. You call to your neighbour but they say there is nothing they can do. It’s in the ceiling now. A wall collapses and drops more fuel into the ever growing furnace. You stand back and start to cry. The heat is so intense now and the smoke is making you sick. You have to get out. You stand and watch as everything you have ever owned goes up in flames. You’re heart sinks, how will you go on? Where will you live? Everything is going to change. The fire engine arrives… but it’s too late.
Read into that how you will. For me the fire-engine is the technology to slow or reverse global warming dramatically. The water on the pan is the policies our governments try to put in place. The burning bench top an ecological system we didn’t expect to have any effect and the collapsing roof a feedback system where global warming kicks off more global warming.
But how will this play out in the real world? How will this affect you; an informed citizen of the developed world?
In order to answer these questions and turn this blog into a more regular typing ground I’ve decided to start a series of articles on global warming. More specifically, what global warming is going to do to the environment, the people, the cultures and the world. How long will this series go for? I have no idea. At the rate that I post on here the world could have run out of oil and experienced WWIII by the time the last article is written.
But I will try, because everyone needs to know: We’re all f@#ked!
