It was recently brought to my attention that Atheists are the most disliked group of people in America. That’s right I’m more disliked than Muslims and homosexuals (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
The 2006 study by the University of Minnesota found that 39.6% of Americans think Atheists “do not at all agree with my vision of American society” and a massive 47.6% of Americans would disapprove of their children marrying an Atheist.
This is scary since the recent events at republican rallies seem to imply that a sizable chunk of America believe Muslims should be killed…and these people like Atheists LESS!? Am I worse than a terrorist*, because at least they believe in SOME god?!
See for me, the idea of choosing a religion is much like a multiple choice test question:
Which of the following religions is “right”?
a) Christianity
b) Islam
c) Buddhism
d) Judaism
e) Hinduism
f) None of the above
Now if this were a question in an exam at university one would have been expected to have researched all of the available options at some point in their course and have come up with a clear answer (or alternatively scan up the page and observe that “C” hasn’t been chosen for a while).
Unfortunately in life, people hardly ever do their research and cheat by looking at what their parents put down. Though I guess it is unreasonable to assume that people will research the 20,000 or so religions that have existed during the reign of humanity or even the 4,000+ that exist now….all equally and loudly proclaiming to be the the “right” one.
For a country that has progressed so far in their tolerance for people of different cultures, races and sex that they are on the verge of voting in an African American president, to be unable to accept the view of those who abstain from religion of any form shows just how much further they have to go.
As I enter America a hated man, one thing will give me the courage to go on…. in my heart I know that Darwin loves me.
*I’m aware that not all Muslims are terrorists, that not all terrorists are Muslims and that Obama is in no way either of these… however many American’s do not.
