7 Billion

I watched the trailer for the movie 2012 today. It’s cashing in on one of the biggest doomsday theories buzzing around on the internet at the moment. That a galactic alignment, predicted millennia ago by the Mayans with the ending of the Long Count in their calendar, results in a catastrophic flood and destroys the world.

The trailer starts with a Monk running up some mountains as these words flash defiantly onto the screen:

“How would the governments of our planet prepare 6 billion people for the end of the world?”

6 Billion?! Correct me if I’m wrong but Y2K didn’t stop babies from being born. Stop telling me there are 6 Billion people in the world. Google World Population. It’s not that hard. In 2009, we are at 6.7 Billion. In 2012 when this movie is supposed to be set we will be even closer to 7 Billion, if not beyond.

Over population is a under appreciated problem in the world today. If we are going to get serious about tackling the environmental issues ahead of us and move to a more sustainable lifestyle we are going to have to stabilise and then lower the world population. But when the mass media and Hollywood keep telling everyone that in the past 10 years the population hasn’t increased at all. Then it is hardly something the average person will be thinking about.

Since when has math told us to round down to the nearest Billion!? It is time everyone started rounding up. All 7 Billion of you.
